we need to start fresh with 2021. new notebooks, blank calendars, big ass to-do lists and the whole year with which to attack them. as sentimental rounds the corner to see its second calendar year, one of the things on my own to-do list is to put out good music. so i'm starting 2021 in a big way.

in free fall, mal's debut ep, is the musical equivalent of a clean start. it sounds like every new year's day i've ever had, like walking to the corner store to get orange juice at 7am after a sleepless new year's eve. softly strummed acoustic guitars, hushed vocals, muted percussion. thoughtful and atmospheric. sad? a little. but optimistic. how could you not be? when confronted with so much space, the empty space of your new notebooks and calendars, the space between where you were last year and where you are now, who you were, it's only natural to feel like you can't find firm ground.

sonically, the strength of this ep lies in its fearless embrace of space. songwriters tend to get nervous when faced with too much silence, too many instrumental interludes, any moment without a narrator. but that's just proof of mal as the consummate musician. if a moment is empty of mal as the vocalist, it is never empty of mal as the instrumentalist, mal as the producer. and in all the space left uncluttered by overthought arrangements and too dense production, there's room for the listener. for the listener to exist in the music while walking to the corner store to get orange juice at 7am and bask in the space of a new year.
